When Rachel got home, she laid a crisp twenty-dollar bill down in front of Berlin and walked off without saying a word.

“Guess what happened?” Berlin said, snapping the twenty between her fingers.

Katherine smiled. “We were right.”

“Damn, if only we could be so prescient about the lottery numbers,” Berlin said.

“And just what would you do with all that money?”

“I’d buy the town.”

“Berlin, no one else may know it, but I know who owns most of the land in this town. You aren’t fooling me with that Dyke Astronomy, Inc. You may have everyone else convinced it’s some outfit from California, but I know better.”

“Shh, someone might hear you.”

“What are you going to do with it?”

“We’re going to retire on it. Land is a good investment.”

“My god, you are a financial genius. So what would you really do with the lottery money?”

“I’d buy Rachel a new attitude.”

Katherine rubbed Berlin’s shoulders. “She sees everyone around her in love and she’s not. It’s a hard thing.”

“She won’t let herself be in love. What about Lily? Smart, attractive, tits to die for, and the nicest little tush in town, and does she have a thing for Rachel? Yes. Only Rachel’s busy being a contorted asshole and can’t see five feet in front of her face. Lily’s going to have to jump her bones in order to make an impression.”

“If it’s meant to be, it’ll happen. Now come to bed.”

“You have a pretty nice tush yourself,” Berlin said, squeezing it.

“Maybe you could jump my bones then,” Katherine said, racing her way up the stairs with Berlin hot in pursuit.

Rachel lay in bed listening to them. She got up and quietly slipped out of the house.
